When the Porsche 911 was first introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1963, it created a sensation. It was and still is today an Porsche 911SC, Michael Robson presents Hot Carsautomobile designed and engineered to set the standard in its class. Many different 911 models have evolved over the years. The subject of this HOT CARS article is the Porsche 911SC built between 1978 - 1983.

People who know Michael know that he loves Porsches and the 911 is by far his all time favorite Porsche. He has a special place in his heart for the 911SC because Michael started selling Porsches close to the time the 911SC was introduced to the market.

The 911SC is a refreshingly timeless design and still is an impressive automobile even by today's standards. The double-sided zinc-galvanized steel body is extremely high quality and very strong in case of an accident. Porsche was the first automaker in the world to provide a full 10 year limited warranty against rust-through on later 911 models based on the durability of the original 911SC galvanized bodies.

The 911SC is powered by a 3.0 litre normally aspirated air-cooled engine located behind the rear axle. It is rated at 172 hp @ 5500 RPM with a maximum rev limit of 6300 RPM. 172 hp doesn't sound like much, but because of the Porsche's light weight (under 2750 lbs.) and the lack of a power robbing driveshaft, the 911SC is capable of 0 - 60 sprints in 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 230 kph+. Porsche 911SC, Michael Robson presents Hot Cars

In the hands of an experienced driver the 911SC is a remarkably good handling car even though it is a touch rear sensitive if you lift the throttle in a corner. The steering is non-assisted but with the engine in the back the steering is effortless even at slow parking speeds. I would characterize the 5 speed shifter feel as vague with a fair amount of sloppiness in the stick but you get used to it and this becomes indiscernible when the car is driven quickly. A short shift upgrade kit is available to improve the feel of the shifter for those so inclined.

The 1983 911SC was the first 911 to be offered with a convertible top and the first Porsche Cabriolet since the last 356 model of 1965.

The 911SC was built for six years and before production ended in 1983, 57,972 cars were produced worldwide. This makes the 911SC the most popular 911 model Porsche has ever produced.
