Port Moody's pristine location at the head of Burrard Inlet makes it an attractive place to live, work and play. Surrounded by mountains, water and forested hillsides, the community offers a unique quality of life and strong sense of community balanced by mixed residential, commercial, and industrial development. An emerging town centre and plans for the City's waterfront offer promising long-term potential for economic development. Anchored by the Port Moody City Hall and Civic Complex (including a public library and recreation facilities), the Eagle Ridge Hospital, and a phased commercial/residential hi-rise development, Port Moody's New Town Centre links the City's foreshore park with new neighbourhoods on the north and south shores. Port Moody was historically an industrial town, serving as the original west coast terminus of the CPR and an emerging centre for marine-based operations. The City's strong sense of heritage values is preserved by the Port Moody Museum, the identification and preservation of historical buildings, and the Art Centre formerly known as the old City Hall. The Art Centre was built in 1914 and renovated in a heritage theme in 1996. The annual "Port Moody Festival of the Arts" held in May and the "Golden Spike Days Festival" held in July each year also contribute to community spirit and pride. Also important to the City's character are local environmental initiatives such as fish hatcheries, stream stewardship projects, a City-led "Naturescape" program. On the transportation side, the Barnet Highway provides fast moving access to and from Vancouver during rush hour. The West Coast Express commuter rail also connects Port Moody to downtown Vancouver and communities east to Mission using the existing CPR line. Plans also call for Light Rail Transit connecting Port Moody to New Westminster and Coquitlam within the coming years. Finally, Port Moody takes great pride in its park system. Foreshore Park contains walking and bicycle paths and links Old Orchard Park on the north shore with Rocky Point Park on the south shore. In addition to numerous local parks throughout the City, Port Moody also includes Belcarra Regional Park and Sasamat Lake. |
